Nairobi - Masai Mara, Kenya - Arusha - Serengeti National Park, Tanzania
Beginning in Nairobi we first cross the Great Rift Valley for a couple of day’s game-watching in the Maasai Mara National Reserve, Kenya’s premier wildlife reserve and home to the ‘Big 5’. From the ‘Mara’, we briefly head back to Nairobi before crossing into Tanzania to Arusha, from where we transfer to 4x4 vehicles for a 3-day excursion to the Serengeti National Park, and the Ngorongoro Crater. Both are World Heritage Sites well known for their magnificent scenery and large concentrations of game.
Dar es Salaam - Zanzibar
From Arusha, we drive south past the foothills of Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain, to the balmy city of Dar es Salaam, the port and ferry terminal for the exotic island of Zanzibar. Once there, we get three days in this historic Arab-influenced tropical paradise to explore the capital Stone Town’s alleyways, architecture and markets, as well as the white-sand beaches fringed by palm trees where it’s impossible not to relax. Returning on the ferry to the African mainland, we leave the coast and drive via Mikumi National Park into Malawi.
Lake Malawi - Livingstone, Zambia
Once on Lake Malawi, Africa’s third-largest lake, we camp for a few days on the beaches to enjoy the fresh clear water by diving, snorkelling or sailing or there are also the options of horseback riding or take a guided village walk to see how the locals live. Leaving Malawi we cross into Zambia and make our way via Lusaka, the capital, to Livingstone which is close to Victoria Falls. We view ‘the Smoke that Thunders’ to admire the Zambezi River as it tumbles more than 100 metres into the Bakota Gorge, and can also try the numerous adventure activities on offer from white water rafting and canoeing to gorge-swinging and bungy jumping.
Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe - Hwange National Park -Bulawayo - Matobo National Park - Masvingo, Great Zimbabwe Ruins.
From Victoria Falls, we drive the short distance to Zimbabwe’s premier game-viewing area – Hwange National Park, where an afternoon game drive is on offer to see the large herds of elephant that the park is so famous for and perhaps see rare species like African wild dogs or brown hyena. Our next stop is Bulawayo, Zimbabwe’s second-largest city. We head into the Matobo National Park, where we game drive and track on foot to see ancient rock paintings and the last significant population of the endangered white rhino in Zimbabwe. Continuing on we visit the Great Zimbabwe Ruins, an important archaeological site and formal trading post.
Bandula area, Vilanculos, Tofo, Inhambane, Bilene, Mozambique - Kruger National Park and Pretoria, South Africa
We cross the border into tropical Mozambique and head to the warm waters and white sandy beaches to enjoy a few days relaxing at the rustic resorts Vilanculos and Tofu, Inhambane and Bilene. These feature sandy beaches fringed with palm trees, a balmy climate and the azure and the warm Indian Ocean alive with marine life. A Dhow Safari – Magaruque Island snorkelling trip is included and many optional activities are on offer. Alternatively, simply relax in a hammock, take a long walk on the near-deserted bleached-white sand or feast on a seafood lunch. We cross the border into South Africa and the famed Kruger National park - home to over 505 species of birds, 148 species of mammals and many reptiles which we enthusiastically search for during the morning and afternoon game drive.
Our last day takes us to the vibrant Pretoria, where our exciting tour ends.
