Day 1 – 2
Our tour begins in Pretoria, the administrative city of South Africa. Starting early, we travel east through the Mpumalanga province to the Greater Kruger area. Kruger is South Africa’s premier national park and connecting with parks in adjoining Mozambique and Botswana, covers 24,000 square kilometres of land used in the protection of African wildlife! Over dinner, we enjoy a Shangaan cultural evening including traditional dance. We enjoy a full day’s game viewing in the national park in an open 4x4 safari vehicle, seeking wildlife encounters with Africa’s ‘Big 5’ - lion, elephant, buffalo, rhino and leopard – as well as giraffe, hippo, zebra, various antelope and a variety of amazing birdlife and reptiles.
Day 3 – 5
Leaving Kruger, we move north pausing the night near the Limpopo River to the Beitbridge Border. Completing formalities at the border post we enter Zimbabwe and drive through stunning landscapes to Bulawayo, the second-largest city in Zimbabwe. Here we enjoy the evening exploring the city and the bustling nightlife. The following day we explore Matobo National Park with a local operator by vehicle and foot to view the endangered Rhino's that inhabit the area, the many roaming animals and some bushman paintings which are located in nearby caves.
Day 6 – 7
Today, we cross into Zambia and drive to Livingstone and our camp situated on the banks of the Zambezi River. Feed your hunger for adrenaline with white water rafting, bungee jumping, abseiling, gorge swinging and amazing scenic flights (microlight, helicopter or small plane) or enjoy the surroundings on canoeing safaris and horse riding treks. However, don’t leave without seeing the thundering Victoria Falls themselves. At over a mile wide and over 100 metres deep, the Falls produce the world’s largest curtain of falling water in the world. Up close they are formidable and at times of high water, the spray can be seen from 20 kilometres away, hence their local name Mosi Oa Tunya – the ‘smoke that thunders’.
NB For the sake of practicality, meals in the Livingstone/Victoria Falls area are restricted to breakfasts. This allows you to take on half-day or full-day activities (some of which include lunch) without having to be back with the group at mealtimes. The Victoria Falls Waterfront camp restaurant overlooks the Zambezi River and offers a good selection of reasonably priced meals and snacks throughout the day (we suggest you allow US$25-$35/ day).
Day 8 – 9
Bidding farewell Livingstone, we cross the border to Botswana and the Chobe National Park for an afternoon game viewing cruise on the Chobe River to watch hippos wallow, kingfishers feed, and the African sun slip below the horizon. The next day, we rise early and re-enter the park by an open 4x4 safari vehicle to view the resident wildlife we may have missed on the cruise the evening before. We depart and head south to Elephant Sands where we camp for the night on the edge of a game watering hole.
Day 10 – 12
Further south is the Okavango Delta, a natural wetland where the Okavango River fans out onto the plains to form the largest inland delta of its type in the world. Explore the myriad waterways and wetlands on foot and by dugout canoe (mokoro), catching glimpses of hippo, crocodile, buffalo and elephant. We stay in a tented camp on a river island and enjoy the peace amongst the swamps, lily pads and swaying grasses of the Okavango Delta.
Day 13 – 16
Our journey takes us to Namibia where we join the Bushmen for a guided walk before continuing to Windhoek and Etosha National Park. This vast reserve of over 20,000 sq km surrounds a central salt pan. We spend two days in the area mixing vehicle-based game-drives with static viewings. From Etosha, we turn further south to Damaraland, an area of eerie landscapes and barren rocky outcrops, to Spitzkoppe (sometimes known as the ‘Matterhorn of Africa’) where there is the opportunity to see some Bushman paintings.
Day 17 – 21
We reach the Atlantic coast and sandwiched between ocean and desert is Namibia’s premier coastal getaway, Swakopmund. Relax and enjoy the local cafe culture or try some adrenaline-pumping optional activities such as quad-biking, sand-boarding and skydiving! We continue south pausing at a bush camp just outside of Solitaire before reaching the world’s oldest desert at Sossusvlei. Rising early we enter the Namib Naukluft Park before dawn, and (energy permitting) climb one of the massive sand dunes to watch a sunrise over the vast sand sea. From here we head on a 4 x4 vehicle to walk through the desert dunes of Sossusvlei & Deadsvlei area.
Day 22 – 25
Further south we visit another natural wonder of Africa – the Fish River Canyon, second-largest in the world. We pause the night at camp on the banks of the Gariep (Orange) River, before crossing the border to South Africa. It's then off to cosmopolitan Cape Town, one of the world’s most attractive cities before our South West Safari ends.
